How does laser cleaning actually work?

A pulsed or continuous laser beam is delivered through a hand-held head and absorbed by whatever is sitting on the surface — rust, paint, oil, scale, biofilm. That layer heats almost instantly and either vaporizes or breaks its bond and lifts off, a process called ablation. The removed material is captured by extraction at the source. Nothing touches the part, and nothing is left behind to rinse, dry, or sweep up.

Why doesn't the laser damage the metal underneath?

Every material has an ablation threshold — the energy level at which it starts to vaporize. Rust, paint, oil, and coatings have far lower thresholds than steel, stainless, or aluminum. By setting the beam above the contaminant's threshold and below the substrate's, the unwanted layer is removed and the base material is left essentially untouched. That physical difference is what makes the process selective, and it is why laser can do work that abrasives cannot: a blast nozzle has no way to tell coating from substrate.

Which substrates can you work on?

Steel, stainless, cast iron, aluminum and other non-ferrous metals, tool steel and mold tooling, stone, brick, concrete, and — with care — wood, plastics, and electronics. That said, the honest answer always depends on the substrate's condition and what is on it. We run a test patch on an inconspicuous area first, confirm the result with you, and only then proceed. We will tell you if laser is the wrong tool for your part.

Do you have both types of laser?

Yes, and it matters. We run a 1,000 W pulsed machine and a 2,000 W continuous machine. Pulsed gives fine control with very little heat into the part, which is what delicate, thin, heat-sensitive, and precision work needs. Continuous removes heavy build-up over large areas far faster. Most providers own one or the other and have to compromise — a pulsed-only shop is slow on structural steel, and a continuous-only shop risks heat damage on thin or delicate work. We pick the machine to fit the job.

Will the rust come back?

Laser cleaning leaves bare, dry, clean metal — and bare steel will begin to oxidize again on its own, the same as it would after blasting or grinding. For long-term protection the surface needs a coating, and laser prep is a good starting point for one because there is no grit embedded in the surface and no solvent residue to interfere with adhesion. If you are not coating immediately, we can discuss timing and temporary protection.

What does it cost?

It depends on scope, access, substrate, and how heavy the contamination is — which is why we do not publish a flat rate. Two jobs of the same square footage can differ substantially depending on what is on the surface and how reachable it is. We quote by the hour, by the day, or as a fixed job price, whichever suits the work. The assessment is free, and worth noting: a higher-powered machine that finishes in fewer hours often produces a lower total invoice than a cheaper hourly rate on underpowered equipment. Compare total job cost, not the hourly number.

Do you come to us, or do we send parts to you?

Whichever fits. Mobile service is our primary model and we cover Virginia — for anything bolted down, too large to move, or too expensive to take out of service, we bring the equipment to your facility. You can also drop parts off at our shop in Vinton, or ship them in and we will ship them back. Portable parts are often cheapest to handle at the shop since there is no mobilization to cover.

What do you need from us on site?

Less than you might expect. Access to the work area and clear space around the piece is the main thing — we run off our own generator, so we do not need to tie into your power at all. If you would rather we used your 220V supply, we can do that instead; just point us at an outlet during the assessment. We set up a controlled work area with barriers and signage, use wavelength-matched eyewear, and run fume extraction at the source. We walk the area with you first, then complete a written hazard evaluation for the job and go through it with you before the laser is switched on — you keep a signed copy. If your facility requires a certificate of insurance, safety orientation, or a permit before we start, tell us during the assessment and we will have it handled beforehand.

How long does a job take?

That comes out of the test patch. Removal rate varies enormously with the coating, its thickness, the substrate, and access — so rather than quoting a general figure, we time a measured patch on your actual part and scale from there. It is the only way to give you a number that holds up.

Is it safe around our people and equipment?

Accepted Answer

These are Class 4 lasers and they are treated accordingly: a controlled work area with barriers and signage, wavelength-matched eyewear for everyone inside it, extraction to capture fume at the source, hearing protection, and a written hazard evaluation completed and signed before work starts on every job. When we work at your place, that evaluation covers the specific building we are in — where the boundary sits, which surfaces reflect, what is behind the work, who else is nearby, and the conditions under which we stop. When a part comes to our shop instead, our own bay is documented once in a standing evaluation, and we complete a signed record for your part covering the coating screen, the settings proven on it, and the controls used. Either way the same questions get answered in writing before the laser is energized. The process itself is dry, chemical-free, and non-contact, so there is no overspray, no runoff, and no grit migrating into adjacent equipment. We are licensed and insured, and we can provide a certificate on request.

Question 11

What about lead paint or other regulated coatings?

We screen for them during the assessment, before quoting. Lead, cadmium, and chromate primers are regulated by their own OSHA standards, and removing them is an abatement job with its own monitoring and containment requirements — not something we take on. Anything painted before 1978, or of unknown age, gets flagged. If a regulated coating is suspected and cannot be ruled out, we will tell you plainly and stop there rather than proceed and create an exposure problem for your people and ours. Galvanized and polyurethane-coated surfaces we can handle, with filtration matched to what comes off them.
